Chapter Summaries:
[00:00] Meet Jerry Bui, a digital forensics expert and certified fraud examiner.
[01:38] Digital Forensics deals with data that may be used for evidentiary purposes in a court of law. Jerry’s work involves white collar crimes, including privacy breaches and internal threats e.g., employees breaking compliance laws.
[03:18] It’s a lot harder to track crime and have an audit trail in non-digital spaces due to the lack of metadata.
[05:30] Social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter collect user data for advertising purposes. Compared to the United States, the European Union is more conscious of data privacy and enforces personal data privacy by law.
[07:21] We need security measures to safeguard against discrimination on the basis of private health data. Often, health tracking apps are released with features first, security second, legal compliance last.
[09:33] Because of the potential for geolocation data to be exploited for political means, individuals should be weary of which devices and apps have access to their private data.
[11:25] Consumers can take the following steps to safeguard their personal data:
Set up your router so that the public IP addresses aren't running throughout all the devices in your home.
Change the administrative password to the router provided by your internet service provider (ISP).
Use a virtual private network (VPN) to provide an extra layer of security.
[14:08] For consumers who are not technologically savvy, turning on simple security features on devices and asking for help when needed can be a good place to start.
[16:26] Data must be anonymized when used for research purposes, and security training is essential for clinical-facing professions.
[19:33] Cybersecurity will remain a battlefield in the years to come, as nefarious players looks for loopholes to exploit. We can exercise personal vigilance by educating ourselves about cybersecurity and taking appropriate measures.
